Alright, radio pros, we need to address something that’s hurting your content—and it’s not the camera angle or lighting. It’s the audio. The same audio you’ve spent years mastering on air, but for some reason, when it comes to social videos, we’re seeing studio mics front and center but not actually being used. Yep, the mic is right there in the shot, making you look legit, while the camera mic is actually doing all the work. Spoiler alert: your audience can tell, and it looks…well, fake.

Here’s the deal: you’re radio professionals. You should have the best audio on the internet! We have a unique advantage in the sound game, so let’s make sure we’re actually using it. Plan ahead, set yourself up for success, and let’s put that radio expertise to work in every video you share.

5 Tips to Improve Your Social Video Audio

  1. Lose the Prop Mic Act If you have a studio mic in the frame, use it. If it’s just there for show but the sound is coming from the camera’s mic, you’re doing a disservice to your audience. Either use the real mic or move it out of the shot entirely. Nothing kills credibility faster than looking like you’re all talk.

  2. Invest in a Quality Lavalier Mic (It Won’t Break the Bank!) Rechargeable lavalier mics from brands like Rode or DJI can make a world of difference in sound quality without costing a fortune. These small, wireless mics capture clear, professional-grade audio and keep things portable and hassle-free. Plus, they’re rechargeable, so you’re never left scrambling for batteries.

  3. Place the Mic Right Clip the lav mic to your shirt collar or somewhere within 6-8 inches of your mouth for the best sound. This placement helps reduce background noise and delivers that rich, radio-quality audio your audience expects from you.

  4. Do a Quick Sound Check Before you hit record, put on some headphones and do a sound check. Background noise can be sneaky, and hearing it in real-time lets you catch issues before they mess up your video. You’ll save yourself re-takes and present polished audio right from the start.

  5. Choose Your Recording Space Wisely You don’t need a studio, but a little thought goes a long way. Avoid echoey rooms and pick spaces with soft surfaces that reduce echo. A few strategically placed cushions or blankets can keep your audio sounding intimate and professional.

I think they are both great options.

Why All This Matters

You’re in radio, the original audio experts! Your social videos should reflect that expertise and stand out as some of the best-sounding content out there. It’s not just about visuals; it’s about showing that, as radio people, we get sound. This isn’t just some influencer game—it’s your reputation.

So, ditch the fake setup, plan ahead, and take a few simple steps to ensure your audio shines. Trust us, your audience will notice, and so will your bosses. Remember, you’re radio. Let’s set the standard for sound, on-air and online.
